How often do I actually need a Pap smear?

We strictly follow the evidence-based U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) guidelines for cervical cancer screenings. You do not necessarily need a Pap smear every single year. The general screening roadmap includes:

  • Ages 21 to 29: Cervical screening (cytology alone) every 3 years.

  • Ages 30 to 65: Screening every 3 years with cytology alone, every 5 years with high-risk HPV testing alone, or every 5 years with co-testing (both together), depending on your specific health history.

Note: Even on years when a Pap smear isn't required, an annual well-woman primary care visit is still highly recommended to track your metabolic health, check your breasts, manage hormones, and renew prescriptions.

I am terrified of the pain associated with Pap smears and IUD insertions. Can you help me?
